Black Uhuru means Black Freedom Posted on September 13th

For most people, reggae music means Bob Marley. For me, reggae music means Black Uhuru and Lee Scratch Perry. Here is Black Uhuru doing one of their signature songs at the Glastonbury Festival.

Puma Jones is the female in the group. A woman with a beautiful angelic voice that went to Columbia University before joining this group and adding so much. Sadly she passed of cancer and when that happened the world of music lost a voice that many loved.

Sly and Robbie [bass and drums] are two of the worlds most famous session musicians. They’ve played on just about everyones sessions at one point or another [think Grace Jones, Mick Jagger etc] Black Uhuru were very wise to have these ace musicians doing most of their music. This left them to focus on harmonies and words with pointed social messages.

Enjoy a little Black Uhuru and do explore more of their catalog if you enjoy this. Guess who’s coming to dinner and Sponji Reggae are among some of my favorites from them.
