geocaching again! Posted on August 13th

Loon lake

So yesterday was a quiet day and I thought I’d head out and do a few geocaches that are around where we’re staying here in lovely Chestertown, NY.

The first geocache was called Loon Lake (picture right) and seemed easy enough.  I got over there and spent about 30 minutes looking and looking and looking.  While I got some great pictures of mushrooms, I couldn’t for the life of me, find the cache!

So I gave up, got back to the truck and reloaded the geocache page on my iPhone. Lo and behold, the geocache was marked as stolen or missing while I was out looking for it.  How funny is that?

At starbuckville dam

Feeling vindicated, I headed over to the Starbuckville Dam (picture right) geocache.  I know this dam pretty well as we’ve gone fishing over there a number of times.  Well, as usual, the geocache got me into a trail I didn’t know

existed and after about 20 minutes of triangulation with the GPS, I found the cache!

Geocache success!!

The cache had a number of little trinkets, so I snagged the ladybug for our little 4 year old and signed the

logbook.  I love reading these logbooks as folks sign that they found the cache and what they thought of the hunt.  This particular cache had been there since 2006 so there was a long list of names and comments.

After signing the cache and putting it back safely into it’s hiding spot, I felt the rush of victory and got back to our homebase tell the tales.

Have you ever geoached?  Do tell…

  • I live in Ontario, Canada, and have been geocaching for a year now, with close to 60 caches found so far. Like you, I'm always amazed to find that I don't know some areas as well as I thought I did. It's a wonderful hobby for all ages, and I highly recommend it.
