tools to help you manage projects - alternatives to basecamp Posted on June 27th

being a project manager means being organized. there is an ever changing list of tools that one can use to organize people and tasks. the site that most seem to know is basecamp. i personally am not such a fan of basecamp and avoid it when i can. nonetheless, there are plenty of folks that swear by it.

below is a link to a good list of project management tools that cover the same ground. let’s put a pin in it and save for future reference. you know you’ll need it at some point.

    Hi Sean,

If you want to start with simple, sensible, and supportable REAL project management you can start with VPMi Express ($5/user/month). For most companies, VPMi Express is cheaper then Basecamp and oh so much more functional (unlimited documents, project dashboard, Gantt chart, profit/loss, timesheets, and issues).

VPMi express is free for first 30 days and we have an extensive video training collection to help you get started.

I know Basecamp is the darling of the press but honestly I am not impressed with their products, price, or infrastructure. I think of them the same way I think of Bose speakers. They are pretty good but get all the press and attention from people not familiar with what is available.

Also be VERY CAREFUL with passwords in Basecamp! Basecamp doesn’t hide passwords (login as an admin and view users and right click / view source to see passwords!), has no Gantt view, no profit/loss, no task end dates, no task dependencies, and you can’t download your data if you ever want to move to another product (yes – they hold your data hostage).

This has been our life's work and we have 30,000 users around the world over the last 10 years.

I wish you luck in whatever you land on and you can feel free to write us with any questions you might have.

    Warm Regards,
