Ithaca NY. How do I describe this place? One of those places that you've always heard about but never have been. Then when you finally go, you say to yourself "Why did I wait so long?!" A great city with great food, energy, art, music and mountains.
Definitely will go back and explore further. Even in the cold of winter, there was warmth and beauty to be had for tourists like us. We stayed at lovely B&B called the Inn on Columbia. From there we could walk to many restaurants and even to the theatre to capture the awesome Avett Brothers. A great show, a great weekend, and lots of great pictures.
Here's a slideshow of my pictures. If you don't see a slideshow, just click here. Hope you enjoy as much as we did.
So I took a brief little trip to LA. I lived in LA as teenager and had some great experiences there and met some very nice people. I haven't been back to the west coast since my trip to burning man a few years back so it was time.
Unfortunately, the weather upon my arrival was AWFUL. RAIN RAIN and MORE RAIN. Oh and mudslides which I learned are not like sludge, as I had imagined, but more like avalanches with dirt instead of snow.
Fortunately, my hosts lived in a section of LA that is mercifully flat and was spared any evacuations or other emergency measures.
Thankfully, after a few days of RAIN RAIN RAIN [did I say it rained?] the sun popped out and blue skies greeted us. One benefit of all that rain was that the smog was all washed away giving very clear skies. You could easily see the snow caps on top of the mountains that got FEET of SNOW while we were getting RAIN.
The highlights of the trip were meeting a good friend's mom after 20 years of friendship. She was a sweet meemaw and the family resemblance was uncanny. Another highlight was getting reconnected with my best friend from junior high in LA. I have so many good memories of hanging out with him both in LA and in NY so it was nice to get reconnected after 25 years.
Other than that, I also did make it to some notable stops:
Galco's for retro candies, every soda imaginable and beer and spirits from around the globe.
Huntington Library and Gardens A HUGE collection of mansions and art. These people had so much art they had to build more mansions on their hilltop property to showcase it. That's a lot of dosh.
After trying twice in the last month or so to catch the Tim Burton exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art [MOMA], a friend gave in and became a member. Membership has it privileges, among them not being subject to exhibits being 'sold-out' and being able to get guests into the sold out shows. Finally, we got to see the Tim Burton exhibit and most agreed it was full of originality and a strong vein of creativity and mastery of light and dark.
Personally, I more enjoyed the museum's permamant collection of Warhols, Pollocks, Lichtensteins, and Rothkos et. al. So many works that I've seen in books over the years, I finally got to see in person. Yes I need to get out more...
Here are the pics and videos from the day spent with good company. Enjoy...
Yesterday we had a major thaw in Central NJ. All of that wonderful snow we got is GONE! Oh well...I took some time during the afternoon to visit one of my favorite places, the Great Swamp National Refuge and caught some video of the mushy and mucky meltdown.
One of the magical things about being in NYC is that you never know what you'll see walking down the street. A beautiful fall afternoon brought an opportunity to watch couples dancing to romantic french music on the Hudson River Piers in Greenwich village NYC.
